February 1947

Heaven forbid you have "goo" circulating throughout the engine of your '46 Packard.  You'd best pull into the next PAN-AM station, and buy several quarts of "Permalube."

PAN-AM was owned by Standard Oil of Indiana, who had the 'torch' logo seen on the oil can above.  Eventually PAN-AM would be folded into another oil company which the parent company would soon buy: American Oil (AMOCO).

Russell says: I find it amusing how some food items have smiling mascots featuring the product which ultimately gets eaten!  Numerous BBQ joints, for instance.  It brings to mind a truly great commercial parody years ago on Saturday Night Live for The Cluckin' Chicken, a fast-food place with a hyperactive animated chicken as its mascot:
"Hear that sizzling sound?? That's ME!!!"
