/ Southtrust / Wachovia Bank - Eastwood
At the intersection of Crestwood Blvd. (US-78) and Oporto-Madrid Blvd. Built in 1969 as a new branch office for Birmingham Trust National Bank (BTNB), and featured a distinctive trilon-style sign. BTNB was one of four Birmingham area banks which grew into huge regional concerns. Exchange Security Bank ("The Friendly Bank") became First Alabama Bank, later Regions. First National Bank of Birmingham evolved into AmSouth Bank, Central Bank changed its name to Compass Bank, and BTNB in the late '70s morphed into Southtrust Bank. In 2005, Southtrust sold out to Wachovia, an east coast
banking giant. So the "now" picture below whas already become a "then"
itself; the Southtrust name has been retired in favor of Wachovia.
No word as of yet on the fate of the big sign.
The building looks so modern and futuristic for 1969 that I'd half expect to see an ATM somewhere! 1969 photo courtesy of Dixie Neon Company archive
